MENTALLY RETARDED - KEGALLE

Project Description:

 

Parents of a child, the child who is lack - lustre in concentration and intelligence, has been worrying about such ones, repenting over the imaginaries that society incline towards them. Changed their life pattern too, struggle for the better life of the child. The parents who are suffering, due to defect of their own children. Disable children are not being respected in the society. Why should you repent? There is an institution to shout to the world "Refusal is not disability"

 

The sole idea of the organization is to solve education difficulties of the disable kids and ,acknowledge the parents to keep up their moral condition, and to negative their dependent position. Here the children's age isn't a matter but the mental situation. They are educated according to their collected data. They are led to the proper way. Programmes on work;

 

Project Activities :

  • Professional training

  • Acknowledgement class (public/parents)

  • Daily educational class Semi period children's development programme

  • Daily preschool National /religious /sports and cultural festivals and education trips

  • Talent development class organizing

  • Professional & welfare programmes for disables parents and their family units..

 

Vocational training :

 

Once the students complete their normal education they are assigned to the Vocational Training Centre according to the degree of their physical abilities / disabilities. Training is provided in one of the following vocations under the guidance of the competent instructors. The necessary equipments for the training are available in the centre.Special education :

 

The hearing impaired students at our centre are taught through sign language, cued speech and lip Reading and students are given individual speech therapy.

Visually impaired students are educated through Braille / The children with learning difficulties are given a special education.

Physically handicapped students are given a normal education.

 

Skills  Required:

 

  • Care givers do not need to have specific qualifications or experience, although experience with working with people with disabilities is very useful.

  • What is required is a healthy dose of perseverance, patience and love for those who are the most vulnerable in society. The main task is to provide our children with the basic care they need (e.g. washing, dressing, feeding, playing etc.)

  • Care givers should work with and learn from other members of the staff rather than try to advise.

  • The main qualification would be a willingness to adapt to a new context and provide loving care for the residents.

  • Basic care work requires only these qualities and could be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

 

Role of the volunteer :

 

As a volunteer, you will be providing the staff members with those all-important extra pairs of hands. Whilst easing the burden on these hardworking women, you will help out in a number of different areas from assisting with meal times, laundry tasks, to work in the classrooms and activities linked to stimulation and mobility. The children will really benefit from more one-on-one attention which the staffs are just unable to provide and volunteers can really make a difference here. There are several options available for volunteers:

  • Respecting the local culture, religion and customs·

  • Completion of high school/secondary school is required·

  • You must hold a full police check from your home country

 

Location and free time :

 

These project locations are ideal for those wanting to relax and is also perfect for anyone wanting to explore Sri Lanka after their time volunteering or at weekends.Kandy, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Hikkaduwa is the base for many adventure activities including , white-water rafting in Kithulgala , kayaking and trekking.Udawalawe National Park and see the Orphanage Elephant.

 

Accommodation:

 

You will be accommodate in Host Family or in Hostel of the premises or elsewhere close to the project, within walking distance or use a foot cycle ( will be provided ),Three times meals will available in Host Family as well as in the Hostel, tea and snack is provided in sometime. Your will have to share a room with other volunteers or you will have your own room according the availability. Basic bathroom facilities in good condition, pipe borne water or well water, in some areas you will be advised to drink bottled mineral water for your safety, most part of Sri Lanka well water is very good for drinking as well as the pipe water, Electricity, Internet are widely available in Sri Lanka,

 

Hospital, Banks (ATM), Hotels, Restaurant are available in every corner of Sri Lanka, western Union money transfer facility is in each and every bank in Island wide.Big shopping malls with western type food items, good condition of road for you to travel, most of people can communicate in English, you can visit surrounding touristic places when you have a free time to visit. Please avoid travelling in the dark or in the night, always use public transport, it is cheap and safe, do not travel with un known person or vehicle, if you travel by Trishaw(tuk tuk)Get onto metered Taxi, Please take care of yourself, please always get our assistance and advice before you do need to travel anywhere in Sri Lanka, if you feel or suspicious of anything , please call us immediately , we will take necessary action within seconds, as your safety is our priority.
