How will I make a difference?

By volunteering in these projects you will make a major contribution to the welfare of animals in Sri Lanka. Your time and efforts will help to care for the animals, and the majority of the programme cost will go direct to the centre providing a vital source of funding for their work.

 

Typical schedule in these projects:

You will normally volunteer for 5 days per week and generally the day will start at 8.30am and end between 5pm and 6pm. A rota system is followed for the jobs so that the duties are fairly distributed. You are assigned to a supervisor at the start of each working day and will assist in:

 

Location : Sinharaja - Sri Lanka

Start dates: Every week on a Sunday (this is flexible)

Project : Open Year Around

Duration : 4 - 12 weeks, possible to extend (max. 6 months)

Entry Requirements : 

 

  • 18 + years of age

  • Native English Speakers/Near Native English Speakers

  • Good health

  • Being open-minded,

  • adaptable and flexible

  • Respecting the local culture, religion and customs

  • Completion of high school/secondary school is required

  • You must hold a full police check from your home country

 

There is always a lot going on to get involved with! Most volunteers work on a number of different activities; wherever help is needed most at the time. Each day will differ but activities could include:

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

 

  • food preparation

  • animal husbandry practices including cleaning and maintenance of enclosures

  • watering

  • providing enrichment

  • sanimal encounters and animal introductions when they occur

  • caring for new born or orphan animals

  • There is also the opportunity for volunteers to experience a night tour of the centre and you may enjoy exciting encounters in these placements.

 

Description of Projects:

Much of Sri Lanka wildlife is the same as that of the Sinharaja Rainforest. Wildlife Centre houses over 150 animals in their natural habitat, keeping only native animals of Sri Lanka which were either orphaned, born at the centre, rehabilitated, or donated to the centre from other zoological institutions.

The centre believes that by bringing the people of Sri Lanka closer to the animals which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and want to protect them for future generations.

 

Location and free time:

The centre is well located to allow you to explore the wonders that Sri Lanka has to offer. Colombo is about an two hours away by bus and from there you can take bus or train to some beautiful cities in Sri Lanka.

You can chose to spend your free time hiking in the tropical rainforests, snorkeling on amazing coral reefs or just relaxing on its beautiful beaches. There is also a popular bar and restaurant which is only a thirty minute bike ride from the centre.

 

 

Volunteer accommodation:

You will be accommodate in Host Family or in Hostel of the premises or elsewhere close to the project, within walking distance or use a foot cycle ( will be provided ),Three times meals will available in Host Family as well as in the Hostel, tea and snack is provided in sometime. Your will have to share a room with other volunteers or you will have your own room according the availability. Basic bathroom facilities in good condition, pipe borne water or well water, in some areas you will be advised to drink bottled mineral water for your safety, most part of Sri Lanka well water is very good for drinking as well as the pipe water, Electricity, Internet are widely available in Sri Lanka,

Hospital, Banks (ATM), Hotels, Restaurant are available in every corner of Sri Lanka, western Union money transfer facility is in each and every bank in Island wide.Big shopping malls with western type food items, good condition of road for you to travel, most of people can communicate in English, you can visit surrounding touristic places when you have a free time to visit.

Please avoid travelling in the dark or in the night, always use public transport, it is cheap and safe, do not travel with un known person or vehicle, if you travel by Trishaw(tuk tuk)Get onto metered Taxi, Please take of yourself, please always get our assistance and advice before you do need to travel anywhere in Sri Lanka, if you feel or suspicious of anything , please call us immediately , we will take necessary action within seconds, as your safety is our priority.

 

Project Fees Include:

  • All entrance ticket to the tourist hot spots

  • Airport pick up/Drop off

  • Accommodation during orientation and entire project time •

  • Breakfast every morning

  • Lunch & Dinner every work day

  • One day Orientation

  • Onsite Coordinator

  • 24 hour emergency assistance

  • Written record of service completion (for volunteers that successfully complete their project).

 

Project Fees not Include:

  • Travel to/from Home to suburbs.

  • Sri Lanka visa costs (if applicable)Visa extensions

  • International Medical Insurance

  • Cost of criminal police background check (required for this project)

  • Cost of transportation to and from Project site and accommodation (roughly $2 per day)Meals on weekends.
