ELDERLY HOME - KEGALLE

Project Description:

 

In these elderly homes 34 – 75 elderly people both male & female having refuge.This numbers may vary from project to project, This center is located at Nelundeniya in Warakapolaa Divisional Secretariat area, around 60 km away from Colombo. This centre is managed by a Board of Directors under the supervision of Divisional Secretariat of Warakapola. They are able to watch Television and Radio, and have the privilege of having religious observances for their own religion in the centre.Some of them are very happily living and some have missed their loving ones , children. There are few elders who need to be helped as they are immobile. Their life is very miserable and lonely as their loved ones are not caring for them. Some of the elders suffer from mental and physical health and they need good caring.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • The volunteers will help the people to keep their environment clean.

  • Help them with Medication.

  • Help them to keep their dress clean.

  • Bathe the elders who are unable to move.

  • Do simple shopping for the elders.

  • Read stories and the daily newspapers to the elders.

  • Help them to serve the meals and help with the washing of the utensils.

  • Help them with simple handicrafts and sewing.

  • Help them write letters to their children if needed in English.

  • Help them to mend their torn cloths.Sing songs to them if they ask.

  • Assist with walking and light exerciseMonitor food expiration dates, make future meals

  • Make beds and change linens, as needed

  • Light housekeeping to include dusting and vacuuming

  • Assist with bathing, dressing and grooming

  • Laundry and ironing

  • Take out garbage

  • Run errands (pickup prescriptions, dry cleaning)

  • Engage in physical and mental exercises

  • Provide medication reminders

  • Escort on appointments (hair salon, physical therapy, etc.)

  • Escort to religious services or events

  • Engage in activities (games, memory books)

  • Companionship

  • Being open-minded,·

  • adaptable and flexible ·

  • Respecting the local culture, religion and customs·

  • Completion of high school/secondary school is required·

  • You must hold a full police check from your home country

 

Project Requirements: ·

 

  • Have experience of informal and community education·

  • Be able demonstrate an ability to work independently·

  • Be able demonstrate a passion for using education for development·

  • Have the ability to successfully manage their time and prioritise tasks ·

  • Be fluent in English.·

  • Be capable and comfortable adapting to life in a least developed country with sometimes basic living conditions·

  • Be able to adjust to life in another culture and a foreign language, and be able to work at all times with cultural sensitivity·

  • Ideally have previous experience living, working or travelling in a developing country, though is not essential·

  • Be able to financially support them.

 

How will I make a difference?

 

While you engage in elderly care  volunteer placement and help teach and play sports at a range of projects in Sri Lanka including:

 

local primary school and middle schools an orphanage a street children’s centre Volunteers can teach sports lessons at one of our local school placements and pupils are always keen to learn new activities and improve their current sporting skills. Volunteers spend afternoons with the orphans and children at the street children’s centre teaching them sporting skills or new games! The children love to play football, badminton, netball or learn new sports such as table tennis or volleyball. The interaction with volunteers naturally improves the children’s English. Teaching sport in Sri Lanka has a wide range of benefits including improving the health, fitness and wellbeing of the children. Sport coaching helps to encourage teamwork and team spirit, improve concentration and increase the confidence of the children.

 

Location and free time :

These project locations are ideal for those wanting to relax and is also perfect for anyone wanting to explore Sri Lanka after their time volunteering or at weekends. Hikkaduwa is the base for many adventure activities including , white-water rafting in Kithulgala , kayaking and trekking.Udawalawe National Park and see the Elephant Orphanage.

 

Accommodation:

You will be accommodate in Host Family or in Hostel of the premises or elsewhere close to the project, within walking distance or use a foot cycle ( will be provided ),Three times meals will available in Host Family as well as in the Hostel, tea and snack is provided in sometime. Your will have to share a room with other volunteers or you will have your own room according the availability. Basic bathroom facilities in good condition, pipe borne water or well water, in some areas you will be advised to drink bottled mineral water for your safety, most part of Sri Lanka well water is very good for drinking as well as the pipe water, Electricity, Internet are widely available in Sri Lanka,

 

Hospital, Banks (ATM), Hotels, Restaurant are available in every corner of Sri Lanka, western Union money transfer facility is in each and every bank in Island wide.Big shopping malls with western type food items, good condition of road for you to travel, most of people can communicate in English, you can visit surrounding touristic places when you have a free time to visit.

 

Please avoid travelling in the dark or in the night, always use public transport, it is cheap and safe, do not travel with un known person or vehicle, if you travel by Trishaw(tuk tuk)Get onto metered Taxi, Please take care of yourself, please always get our assistance and advice before you do need to travel anywhere in Sri Lanka, if you feel or suspicious of anything , please call us immediately , we will take necessary action within seconds, as your safety is our priority.
